Basics of electrical engineering, especially AC technology

Course content
  • Basics and definitions from standards:
    • Low voltage/high voltage
    • Generation/measurement of high voltage (HVAC, HVDC, switching and lightning impulse voltage, ...)
  • Insulating materials: gas (green gas, SF6, ...), solid insulating materials (epoxy resin, ...) and liquid insulating materials (mineral oils, ...)
  • Field control
  • Electrical strength
    • Discharge mechanisms
    • Breakdown mechanisms
  • Travelling waves, sub/harmonic
  • Different measurement technologies related to insulation aging (partial discharge measurement, tan-δ measurement. Insulation resistance measurement, VLF measurement, ...).
Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain basic problems that arise due to the use of high voltage, explain as well as name remedies.
  • explain the concepts of high voltage generation and measurement.
  • describe electrical strength in various insulating media.
  • describe the aging of insulating materials (cause and effect) and determine it with the aid of appropriate measuring equipment.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
