Basics of electrical engineering, especially AC technology
- Basics and definitions from standards:
- Low voltage/high voltage
- Generation/measurement of high voltage (HVAC, HVDC, switching and lightning impulse voltage, ...)
- Insulating materials: gas (green gas, SF6, ...), solid insulating materials (epoxy resin, ...) and liquid insulating materials (mineral oils, ...)
- Field control
- Electrical strength
- Discharge mechanisms
- Breakdown mechanisms
- Travelling waves, sub/harmonic
- Different measurement technologies related to insulation aging (partial discharge measurement, tan-δ measurement. Insulation resistance measurement, VLF measurement, ...).
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- explain basic problems that arise due to the use of high voltage, explain as well as name remedies.
- explain the concepts of high voltage generation and measurement.
- describe electrical strength in various insulating media.
- describe the aging of insulating materials (cause and effect) and determine it with the aid of appropriate measuring equipment.
Lectures, exercises, case studies, excursion and laboratory respectively
