The right mix of theory and practice

The part-time studies model allows you to work in parallel with your studies. Even without work experience you can enter this study. In doing so, you start your professional career at the same time as your studies. Together with the company, we agree on how you can make the best use of both places of learning.

As a part-time student, you will not have any courses during the day from Monday to Thursday in the first three semesters. Instead, you will be at the FHV all day on Friday and Saturday. In the fourth and fifth semester you choose your individual specialisation. Your choice defines your schedule, courses can then also take place during the week. A good coordination with the company increases your choices.

In the final semester, the joint courses take place primarily on Mondays. For this purpose, Fridays are again available for you. You can always take advantage of offers for full-time students (e.g. revision courses) and attend courses with the same learning objectives.

Your advantages:

  • Founded basic studies with many individual possibilities
  • Practical experience through professional practical training in renowned companies
  • Modern campus, top equipment
  • 24/7 access to technical laboratories
  • Small groups: high practical relevance, personal supervision, lively exchange
  • Clear time frame, clear structure
  • Semester abroad possible worldwide or working with international students
  • Double-degree degree possible

Structure of the study

  • The first three semesters focus on the core competencies of Mechatronics. In addition to the engineering basis, you will also acquire basic skills in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science and already put these into practice in several projects.
  • In the 4th and 5th semester you decide on one of the technical focuses.
  • In the 5th semester you study optionally abroad.
  • In the 6th semester, you focus on your bachelor's thesis in the professional practical training.
  • Individually you can personalize the study even further via electives.

Study programme structure

Technical Focus

you set in the 4th and 5th semester.
Individually, you can personalize the study even further through flexible electives.

Electives (Flex)

The new range of flexible electives, introduced in this form for the first time at the FHV, allows you to give your studies an individual grade.  There is the option to take 2 ECTS each semester or to spread them flexibly over the semesters.

Learning content in detail

Study and career: yes, it works!

Contact hours at the FHV, e-learning units, self-organized learning and group and project work alternate during your studies. You need the necessary discipline and consistent time management for this.

This is how we support you: Courses primarily take place in the specified time slots. If courses take place outside the announced times, we record them and you can check them online at any time. A maximum of five additional days of attendance are required per semester, e.g. for excursions.

This is how you manage:

  • Recorded courses, blended learning and blocked instruction take the pressure off you.
  • Scripts, e-books, technical papers are available to you in electronic form.
  • Contact hours and exam dates are fixed for good planning several months in advance.
  • About half of the instruction takes place in (small) groups. This gives us all space for individual supervision and processing of exercises and projects.

For your study success, you need to coordinate well with your job and your private environment
coordinate. We advise you to reduce your professional activity to a maximum of 70% part-time.
