The FHV library
Search, read and learn
The FHV library is a physical and virtual place for published knowledge. Over 76,400 books, journals, CDs and DVDs are available on site. We also offer access to thousands of e-books, e-journals and extensive subject-specific databases. Our collection focuses on the content of the FHV's degree programmes and covers the areas of Business, Engineering and Technology, Design, Social Work and Health. In addition, our library is a place for communication, learning and academic work.
Our library is open to the public.
Literature search
For literature search in our library, we recommend "Olav" (Online Literature Search of the FHV). Olav lists our physical media holdings, the majority of our licensed e-resources and numerous open access documents. For comprehensive subject-specific research, we also recommend searching the individual databases.
When facing problems with your search read our FAQ's or our search tips.
All e-books, e-journals and databases in the library are subject to terms of use. We also refer you to our privacy notice for e-resources.
Your library account
As soon as you have access to our library lending service, your personal library account is created. This account contains an overview of your loans, deadlines and reservations. You can use your library account to extend your loan period to a maximum of 12 weeks, provided there are no reservations.
Borrowing, returning and interlibrary loan of media
In general, all media can be used in the library rooms. Most media can also be borrowed. The loan period is 4 to a maximum of 12 weeks after renewal. Literature that is not available in the library can be ordered via interlibrary loan.
For external visitors, an annual fee is charged for the issue of the library card, unless there is a reason for a discount. Information on this is summarised in our implementation regulations.
As a rule, all media can be borrowed for 4 weeks. Exceptions are reference collections with a black dot on the shelfmark. Magazines and newspapers cannot be borrowed either.
You can renew your borrowed items via your library account up to a maximum loan period of 12 weeks. Renewals are possible if there are no reservations and you have no overdue items in your account.
Borrowed media can be reserved for loan via the library account . After returning a reserved item, the person who placed the reservation will receive an e-mail notification that the item is available at our information desk. After the collection period stated in the email has expired, the reservation will be deleted.
Holdings from our depot (DEP signature) and media with the status "in process" can also be reserved for use.
For borrowing, we ask for preferential use of our self-checkout.
Information on fees, loan periods and renewal options is summarised in our regulations.
At our remoteLocker in front of the library entrance, FHV members can pick up ordered media with the Campus Card 24/7.
Media can be returned to the information desk during opening hours. Outside our opening hours or when there is little time to visit the library, media can also be returned via our book drop. The book drop is located to the left of the library entrance on the 1st floor of building section D. As we check these items out with a time delay, the return is not immediately visible in the library account.
Exception: Please always return books from interlibrary loan in person at the information desk!
The library can request literature that is not in our collection from other libraries for a fee. Interlibrary loans are reserved for continuing education and scientific research. We ask for your understanding that we limit the number of interlibrary loans ordered to 3 items per order for non-members of the FHV.

If the required literature is not available in our library, our users can send their acquisition suggestions to our library via e-mail. An important criterion for inclusion in the library collection is relevance to studies, teaching and research at the FHV.
- After examination of the acquisition proposals, we inform our users in any case if something is not ordered for our library.
- If the suggested books are ordered, our users will receive an email message when the literature is ready to be borrowed. The ordered literature is available approx. 10 - 14 days after ordering.
- Both articles and books from other libraries can be requested via our interlibrary loan service. Interlibrary loan is subject to a fee. You can find all information on interlibrary loans above under "Borrowing, returning and interlibrary loan of media".
If you have any questions about literature search, the library team will be happy to help.
