Course content

  • Systematics of capital consolidation, debt consolidation, expense and income consolidation as well as elimination of intercompany profits according to UGB and IFRS
  • Interpretation of business reports with consolidated financial statements according to IFRS
Learning outcomes

Capital market-oriented companies prepare their consolidated financial statements according to the rules of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). For students who want to focus on Accounting and Finance, this course provides important accounting skills. Students will be able to orientate themselves in the Third Book of the Austrian Commercial Code (UGB) as well as in the IFRS Code.

Students are aware of the importance and necessity of consolidated financial statements and know the legal basis of group accounting. The students are able to name and describe the facts that trigger an obligation to prepare consolidated financial statements; they know the exceptions to the obligation to prepare consolidated financial statements. The students are able to understand the basic concepts of group law and explain the significance of consolidated financial statements.

The students know the fundamentals and basic principles of IFRS financial statements as well as the principles of preparing consolidated financial statements. They also know the components of a consolidated financial statement according to UGB and IFRS. They are able to define and describe the scope of consolidation according to UGB and IFRS. They are able to make a statement as to whether an obligation to prepare consolidated financial statements is required and delimit a scope of consolidation according to UGB and IFRS.

The students know and understand the systematics of capital consolidation, debt consolidation, expense and income consolidation as well as the elimination of intercompany profits according to UGB and IFRS. They are able to carry out capital consolidation, debt consolidation, expense and income consolidation as well as intercompany profit elimination according to UGB and IFRS.

The students can explain the different valuation methods according to UGB and IFRS in their own words, are able to apply them in case studies and address differences in their own words. Simple recommendations for action for the design of group accounting can be given, students can analyse and interpret corresponding group annual reports.

Interactive course with lecture, case studies, exercises in individual and group work, presentations and homework.

Assessment methods and criteria

Pre-assignment, participation during the seminar in the form of contributions and short presentations (individual or group assignments), post-assignment, individual weighting as determined by the instructors, announcement at the beginning of the semester
