Flying Classroom: MINT project Schlaubeet

08.07.2024
"Schlaubeet" is a pilot project of the Department of Technology at the FHV - Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences as part of the "Flying Classroom" programme. In cooperation with the Schwarzach secondary school, a partially automated raised bed was created during the school year, the technology for which was installed by the students under professional guidance.

"The opening of the 'Schlaubeet' at Schwarzach secondary school was an impressive demonstration of how STEM skills can be vividly conveyed in the classroom. I would like to thank the FHV lecturers Franz Geiger and Christian Anselmi for their great commitment.

I would also like to praise our teachers and the students involved for the successful implementation of the project," emphasized Principal Rebecca Menghin-Stettler. In addition to the numerous pupils and parents, Mayor Thomas Schierle and Deputy Mayor Anita Pluschnig from Schwarzach also marveled at the partially automated raised bed for growing vegetables in the school's inner courtyard.

Interdisciplinary project

The technology was developed by third-year pupils. Schlaubeet is an interdisciplinary project that deals with topics from science and technology and involves the subjects of biology, physics, digital education and engineering and design. The pupils helped to design and program the control system. "The initiative was carried out in cooperation with the teachers. The aim is for us to simply accompany the classes next year so that they can implement it themselves in the third year," explains project initiator Christian Anselmi.

The FHV organizes numerous activities for young talent in the STEM field, including the children's university and the multi-year MINKT@FHV project, which includes art alongside Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Engineering and Technology. The program  "Flying Classroom" of the Department of Engineering and Technology at the FHV was initiated as part of the STEM promotion of students in the lower grades. "Creating space for such projects is not always easy, but it is much more relevant. We are delighted that MS Schwarzach is so active in this area," summarized FHV lecturers Franz Geiger and Christian Anselmi in unison.

Fit for the future

Schlaubeet enables students to look behind the scenes and learn independently and in a practice-oriented way. "Another aim is to teach them to question things critically, but also how to use technology. We want to make them fit for the future," emphasizes project manager Franz Geiger, FHV Electrical Engineering dual programme director. School classes in grades 6 and 7 who are interested in participating in a cooperation with the FHV as part of the Flying Classroom are welcome to contact Franz Geiger or Christian Anselmi.
