To follow the course effectively, basic knowledge of object oriented programming as well as of CAD modelling will be of great advantage
The course will cover the basics of Knowledge-Based Engineering with emphasis on Knowledge-Based Product Configuration. To enable students effectively work on their projects, we will cover object oriented techniques as used by KBE in general and in particular in the computer language C# to support KBE implementation. Moreover, the integration of CAD, KBE and PLM will be covered.
In this course, students will have the chance to learn about an alternative approach to engineering design that relies on automation of design tasks in order to reduce time required and cost, among other things. After completing this course, students will understand the basic concepts of Engineering Knowledge and Knowledge-Based Engineering. They will be able to gather the Engineering Knowledge required and implement knowledge based configuration models for basic to complex products using the Tacton Design Automation software and SolidWorks as examples. Moreover, students will also have general competence in the human aspects of using KBE, how KBE effects engineering work processes, as well as an overall understanding of the whole engineering process.
In conjunction with integrated lectures and laboratory exercise, students will carry out industrial projects which will be presented and evaluated at the end of the semester. In addition, there will be guest lectures by external experts on KBE use and development.
The course will be assessed through a written examination and an evaluation of the project work.
Written exam (20%, must be passes) and
Project work (80%, must be passed).
