Focused on future viability

24.04.2025
Developing and implementing sustainable solutions for the environmental economy: Anyone pursuing this goal will find a practice-oriented degree programme for a future-oriented career at the FHV.

Nick Hämmerle is dedicating his Master's degree in Sustainable Energy Systems at the FHV - Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences to the energy transition. "We are working on optimizing the storage and use of heat and electricity in buildings, industry and mobility. The aim is to achieve a high level of energy efficiency," says the 22-year-old, giving an insight. The focus is on innovations and new technologies, taking into account the Business and Management aspect. "The course has a clear focus on the future viability of our society. That was the reason why I chose it."

Technology meets the environment
The Dornbirn native previously completed a bachelor's degree in Environment and Engineering at the FHV. The broad-based foundation course gave him a very good insight into various areas such as thermodynamics, process engineering, resource management, life cycle analysis and programming. "All these topics are combined with environmental aspects in the course. The focus is on optimizing production processes in order to save Energy and resources. The main aim is to examine the impact of existing processes and procedures on the environment," explains the Dornbirn Schoren BORG graduate.

Studying internationally
The semester abroad in Geel, Belgium, was formative for Nick: "Networking and exchanging ideas with people from different parts of the world was definitely a highlight for me. It opened up new perspectives for me and strengthened my social skills. It was an unforgettable time full of growth, new experiences and valuable encounters," he looks back fondly. Thanks to its international network as a European university, the FHV also offers the opportunity for one-week short stays abroad at various universities - an ideal opportunity for part-time students to make international contacts.

Expanding your network
The high practical relevance is what makes studying at the FHV so special. "We gain an exciting insight into Vorarlberg companies through numerous excursions. This enables us to make contacts with employers at an early stage," emphasizes the passionate mountaineer. After completing his bachelor's degree, Nick continued seamlessly with a master's degree in Sustainable Energy Systems. At the same time, he started his job as Sustainability Manager at Rhomberg Bau Holding, which covers a wide range of tasks: "I advise and train the markets, business areas and construction projects and provide support for sustainability projects. I am also jointly responsible for the introduction of the sustainability reporting structure. Other areas of responsibility include calculating the carbon footprint and the associated communication to various stakeholders." The findings from his studies therefore flow directly into his daily work.
