Hands as the most important tool
12.02.2025During his civilian service at the Social Centre in Egg, Jonas Aberer discovered his passion for a social profession. “I realized that I enjoy taking care of people, so I saw my future in nursing,” says the Bizau native. After completing an apprenticeship with a diploma as a mechanical engineering technician, he decided to study health and nursing at FHV. “They are different worlds. In a traditional craft profession, you deal with materials and machines daily. In nursing, hands are also the most important tool. But there is a big difference, and it shows me today that I made the right decision. I deal with people, it’s about emotions and life situations. I receive so much gratitude and appreciation for my work, directly and every day. The change has enriched my life,” Jonas Aberer emphasizes in retrospect.
Versatility and job security
The six-semester bachelor’s degree combines theory and practice phases. Jonas completed internships in long-term care, home nursing, and acute care in general and visceral surgery at Dornbirn Hospital. “No day is like the other. I can apply my learned knowledge directly,” he enthuses. He particularly appreciates the versatility of nursing and job security. “Every day motivates me anew to give my best.”
On the Alp
The theory blocks at FHV impart valuable knowledge through high-caliber university lecturers and instructors. Dealing with difficult topics such as death is also taught. “We learn strategies to separate professional and private life. This also helps me in everyday life,” explains Jonas Aberer. The Bregenzerwald native can best unwind on the Rubach Alp in Sibratsgfäll. There, he takes care of about 250 animals in the summer, repairs fences, and maintains the landscape. “It’s the simple life without electricity, in harmony with nature – I like it and have known it since I was two years old.” The next summer during the lecture-free period from July to September is already planned for this.
