RUN-EU Short Advanced Programme at FHV: Hack your device
27.02.202533 international students and lecturers from the FHV, the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) in Ireland, the NHL Stenden in the Netherlands, the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA), the Politécnico de Leiria in Portugal, HOWEST in Belgium, the HAMK in Finland and the University of Burgos in Spain dealt with this topic as part of a RUN-EU Short Advanced Programme (SAP).
The participants first dealt with the basics of cyber security before getting down to the actual work - pentesting, i.e. "hacking" the devices. This required a great deal of creativity and problem-solving. In terms of content, the SAP covered typical threats to smart devices and IoT, cyberattacks and, of course, protective measures for these devices. Effective communication and teamwork were very important in order to achieve the goal.
"The students were very committed to 'hacking'. The first results were shown after just a few days of work. By the end of the program in three weeks, all teams will surely be successful and either be able to prove that the device meets high security standards or that it has vulnerabilities. They may even find critical vulnerabilities," summarized Armin Simma, organizer and lecturer in Computer Science at the FHV.
Another highlight was the visit to Doppelmayr Seilbahnen. The participants were impressed by the innovative transportation solutions from the market leader based in Wolfurt.
