Nostrification
Nostrification of foreign bachelor - degrees in Health Care and Nursing
In the higher education sector, nostrification means the recognition of a foreign degree as equivalent to an Austrian bachelor's or master's degree by the college responsible for study matters. Nostrification thus means full equivalence with the Austrian degree, the right to use the corresponding Austrian academic degree and the right to practice a profession associated with this degree in Austria. Nostrification requests for the recognition of a foreign degree can be submitted to any Austrian university of applied sciences that has established an equivalent degree programme.
The Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences can only accept nostrification requests for recognition of a foreign bachelor's degree in Health Care and Nursing. Nostrification requests for recognition of the nursing assistant or nursing assistant degrees will continue to be handled by the Vorarlberg state government.
As applicant:in you have completed your Bachelor's degree in the field of Health Care and Nursing abroad (third countries) at a recognised college or university. According to § 6 Abs 7 FHG, the application requires proof that the nostrification is mandatory for practicing the profession or for continuing the applicant's education in Austria. The FHV reserves the right to conduct an individual examination of this requirement in each case. Nostrification for the recognition of a foreign degree can be applied for at any Austrian university of applied sciences offering the field of study in question.
Within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) as well as Switzerland, access to the professions in Health Care and Nursing is regulated by separate directives, which allow direct access to the profession for nationals of these countries. In these cases, nostrification is not necessary and therefore not possible. In this case, recognition of a foreign professional qualification in Health Care and Nursing can be applied for at the Federal Ministry. For general information on nostrification and professional recognition in Austria, see: www.sozialministerium.at
With the completed and signed application form, the following required documents must be submitted in full in the respective prescribed format. Please note that documents not issued in German or English must be translated by a sworn translator from Austria, Germany or Switzerland.
Here you can find an overview of the necessary documents for nostrification.
Here you can find the applicable authentication and translation guidelines.
Please note that in each case, the signature of the person who signed the document must be notarized (e.g., Director, Rector etc.).

Nostrification is generally designed as a "personal right of the applicant". Therefore, the FHV expressly reserves the right to request your personal appearance at the FHV at any stage of the procedure in order to hear you on your application, your qualifications, the results of the evidence procedure or other matters relevant to the procedure. Please note that it is inadmissible to submit the same nostrification application to colleges at other Austrian universities of applied sciences at the same time or after withdrawal. For this purpose, a reconciliation for the submission of applications is carried out between the universities of applied sciences in Austria on an ad hoc basis.
A substantive examination of the application for nostrification begins from the time when all required documents have been received in full and checked for formal completeness. The FHV will decide on your application within 6 months. After the formal and substantive examination of the complete documents, an expert opinion is prepared by an external expert in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Health Tyrol (fhg - Zentrum für Gesundheitsberufe Tirol GmbH). As the applicant, you will be heard on the outcome of the assessment. Subsequently, a decision is made by means of a decision of the head of the college of the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, which is sent to you as the applicant.
In the event that the decision requires you to attend individual courses or internships, including examinations, you have the option of making up for these as a non-degree seeking student at the FHV. The supplementary examinations must be taken in German (level B2) or in English (level B2) in individual subjects at the FHV.
In case your education is not equivalent to the Austrian study of Health Care and Nursing (congruence with the Austrian study less than 75%) you are free to:
- to apply for recognition for the degrees of nursing assistant or nursing assistant at the Vorarlberg provincial government.
- to apply for admission to the respective, regular bachelor's degree programme in Health Care and Nursing at a university of applied sciences in Austria and, after successful admission, to apply for recognition of individual examinations from your foreign studies, provided they are equivalent.
