What can you expect?

Mars is considered one of the most promising possibilities for the search for life beyond Earth: ESA and NASA space probes are currently investigating its surface and atmosphere, and a manned mission is foreseeable within the next two to three decades. In an extraordinary field experiment in April 2024, researchers in Armenia simulated elements of a manned Mars expedition. Researchers from the Austrian Space Forum and partners from 26 countries were involved in the experiments and tests. Gernot Grömer led this expedition and many others and reports first-hand on the scientific experiments and extraordinary experiences.

Lecturer: Gernot Grömer is an astrophysicist with a doctorate in astrobiology; he is director of the Austrian Space Forum and leads a team developing a spacesuit simulator. He is also TV presenter of the knowledge program "TM Wissen" on Servus TV. He is an analog astronaut and has worked a total of 30 minutes in weightlessness on parabolic flights and currently has 113 working hours in Mars spacesuit simulators. Dr. Grömer has led 13 international Mars simulations in Mars-like locations on Earth: from the Utah Badlands, to hundreds of meters underground in ice caves, to the Northern Sahara and the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula.
