Disegno & Maniera

What can you expect?

The art-theoretical concept of disegno emerged as early as the 15th century as a central artistic discipline. A groundbreaking differentiation was made around the middle of the 16th century by the theorist Federico Zuccari, who distinguished between disegno interno - the intellectual conception of a work of art - and disegno esterno - its material realisation. This view continues to shape our understanding of design to this day, particularly with regard to the conceptual phase and the innovative creative process. Mannerism, or the mannera, developed beyond the paradigms of the Renaissance around 1520; individualised exploration and subjective expression still characterise design work today. Unlike the lifelike depiction of its predecessor, this style was characterised by artistic exaggeration and virtuoso design. Its influence is reflected in numerous later design movements - from Art Nouveau to the present day - and is also echoed in the language of film and in the development of expressive 3D characters.

Lecturers

Markus Schmidt synthesises the worlds of design and fine art with art historical expertise. After completing his studies at the FH Vorarlberg (2010-2013), his career initially took him to Istanbul as a video journalist. His multifaceted career spans an arc from working as a designer in industry and social institutions to teaching at a private art school in the Allgäu region to the fine arts. In 2023, he was a guest lecturer at the Kunsthaus Tel Aviv as a lecturer on 16th century art, especially Mannerism. Since his return to Germany, he has organised various lectures in the Allgäu on the Mannerist art period and its influence on later art and design eras.
